The 115 people who took part built cardboard shelters which were judged by a panel, including Chichester mayor Peter Budge.

Cllr Budge, along with Stonepillow chairman Shelagh Legrave, actor Christopher Timothy and Ursula Watt from the event sponsor George Ide solicitors, named the ‘Best Shelter’ as that made by Jon and Freja Munn.

Mr Budge said: “It started very well, but then when we were judging the heavens opened.

“Everyone got very wet, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits.”

He added: “The winning cardboard shelter was along the lines of Tim Peake’s space station – it really stood out.

“It was wonderful to see so many people coming together to support Stonepillow.

“It was a lot of fun despite the downpour.

“Next year I might have to sleep out myself.”

Jenny Dwyer-Ward, from Stonepillow, said: “We are delighted that the Big Sleepout was a success.

“A huge amount of work goes into planning and we rely on the generosity of the local business community and our supporters and volunteers.

“We are extremely grateful to the event sponsors, George Ide solicitors, and to Stonepillow staff, and above all we are grateful to those who participate and sleepout to raise the awareness and raise funds that enable Stonepillow to continue its work.”
