A WOMAN from Birdham is on a fundraising mission to the heights of a famous sightseeing spot in South America in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.
Melanie McGory will be taking part in a trek to Machu Pichu in Peru in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for the charity.
Alzheimers is a disease close to her heart as she has seen first hand the impact it has upon people’s lives as a carer, and as a relative.
She said: “While at the theatre I casually flicked through the programme and saw on the inside page an advert to make a difference and help people with Alzheimer’s by going on a trek at high altitude in Peru.
“From that minute I was hooked and planning my trip.
“My mum and father-in-law are suffering from Alzheimer’s, my wonderful mother-in-law passed away from this disease in January 2010.
“Two years ago I looked after and became very close with a distinctive and beautiful person both inside and out, whose life was also taken away by this destructive disease.
“It is harrowing for everyone connected to an Alzheimer’s sufferer to witness the relentless move of the illness as it literally erases the person in front of your eyes.”
She will be trekking the Inca Trail from May 12-21. She is funding the trip herself so every penny donated will go directly to the charity.
To sponsor her visit her donation website www.justgiving.com/Melanie-McGrory or donate a maximum of £10 by texting MELS54 plus amount to 70070.
She is holding an afternoon tea at the Field and Fork restaurant at East Pallant to raise money.
It is £14.95 for a selection of sandwiches, breads, scones, pastries, and tea and coffee.
For reservations call Melanie on 01243 512318 or 07817922989.
It takes place on December 13 from 5pm to 6.30pm.
She will have a stall at the Hilliers Garden Centre, in Bosham on December 8, from 5pm, to 7.30pm, as part of special evening to raise awareness of the Alzheimer’s Society.
