A COMMUNITY canoe club is back on its feet after a break-in last year.

Hunston Canoe Club held its annual community event last week (September 28), and 100 people went along to battle it out to be the champion.

This comes one year after £5,000 of the club’s canoes and equipment was stolen from their storage building on the canal.

But an overwhelming response from the community got the group back on track, as they raised enough to purchase new kit, and now it’s business as usual.

“We had a great afternoon of fun at our annual community canoe event,” said David Barr, who runs the club with his wife Helen.

“The main activity was rafted canoe races, where 12 teams representing local groups, and youth organisations competed in a tournament.

“Nearly 100 people participated, and there were many spectators on the bank. This was followed by kayak taster sessions for people to have a go at the sport.

“The afternoon was finished off with a huge pot of goulash and bread that had been cooking all afternoon.”
