Care homes throw open their doors to the community

CARE homes across the area are gearing up to celebrate Care Home Open Day tomorrow.

This joint initiative involves the UK’s leading providers and aims to show that care homes can be enjoyable and stimulating places in which to live and work.

The idea is to encourage local people to visit care homes in their community and to develop better relationships by working together.

Residents from Augusta Court in Chichester will enjoy a variety of activities associated with the theme of ‘The Arts’.

Research carried out by Anchor, which runs Augusta Court, highlighted that England could face a shortfall of 718,000 care workers by 2025.

Samantha Kewell, the manager at Augusta Court, said: “This year’s Care Home Open Day will be a lot of fun for our residents and I hope that people will visit Augusta Court to see for themselves what a great place it is to live and work.”

Bupa’s Church Farm Residential Home in East Wittering is inviting the local community to join in an unusual scarecrow shot-gun wedding and wedding reception.

Doreen Saunders, home manager, said: “This is a great way to show the excellent services on offer and the fantastic work that goes on at Church Farm.”

“Some people still have misconceptions about care homes as we are keen to dispel any myths and for our local community to come and have a look around, meet the staff and our residents and take part in the day.”

The pretend wedding will start at 2pm.

Marriott House and Lodge Care Home, in Tollhouse Close, Chichester, will be opening its doors to the local community for a free event from 2pm to 4pm.

Also open to the public will be Pinewood Nursing Home in Chidham, which is inviting people along between 10.30am and 12pm for coffee and cake.
