Victoria Drive will remain closed for the ‘foreseeable future’ as the full extent of the damage caused by a large sinkhole is established.
And the cause of the sudden opening in the middle of a busy residential road has been revealed.
The collapse of a surface water sewer running under Victoria Drive caused the road to dramatically open up on Monday morning, Highways officials have confirmed.
After confirming the cause, West Sussex Highways said on Twitter: “(The) road will remain closed until foreseeable future. Southern Water to arrange full repair once full extent of damage established.”
The sinkhole was first spotted by a cyclist travelling past it on Monday morning, whose quick thinking alerted the Highways Agency bosses and police, who rushed along and cordoned off the road.
