Chichester, Bognor Regis and Midhurst prepares for World's Biggest Coffee Morning

It's time to get the kettle on and break open the biscuits in aid of the World's Biggest Coffee Morning event which takes place on Friday, September 30.

People across the area are being urged to get involved and hold their own coffee morning, whether at work or school, or just at home with a group of friends and neighbours.

The fun event – where people make a donation in return for tea and cake – is a simple way to raise lots of money for Macmillan, which provides specialist cancer care and support to patients.

The Observer is this week asking readers across Chichester, Bognor Regis and Midhurst to contact us with details of events they are organising.

Among those who will be taking part are Julia Baker and her friend Jan Davenport.

They were both diagnosed with breast cancer at the same time and following treatment, decided they wanted to do something to help raise funds. They held their first Macmillan coffee morning four years ago.

The event was so successful they have held them ever since, regularly raising £3,000 a time.

“We do enjoy organising them,” said Mrs Baker. “We keep saying it’s going to be the last one, but always decide to hold another. We have a committee of nine other ladies who help us, without them we wouldn’t be able to do it.

“We are hoping the weather is going to hold because we have lots of stalls and entertainment for everybody and we want people to come. We get a lot of family and friends coming along and also members of the community.”

Their event will take place on September 30 from 10am-12.30pm at Church Farm House, Old Park Lane in Bosham.

There will be various stalls including produce, books, bric-a-brac, as well as cakes and refreshments, a raffle and an auction with Henry Adams acting as auctioneer.

The mayor of Chichester, Tony French, will be attending.

West Sussex fundraising manager Mandy Kendall said the aim was for people across Sussex to raise at least £246,000.

“We are determined to make this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning our biggest ever,” she said.

“What better way to toast Macmillan than to sign up and get together with friends, eat cake, raise a glass or mug and have fun while helping to raise vital funds.”

Although the official date is September 30, people can hold a coffee morning any date they wish.

“The great thing about this event is you can put your own twist on it and make sure it works for you,” said Mrs Kendall.

“Whether it’s a coffee morning at work, an afternoon tea party with the girls or a lively curry night at the rugby club, each World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event, no matter how small or large, will help Macmillan make a real difference to people affected by cancer.”

All the money goes towards helping the two million people across the UK currently living with cancer.
