Chichester building win top award

A 13th-century building in Chichester has won a top award for restoration work.

St Mary's Hospital has kept its ancient buildings and endowments, and is still in use as an almshouse providing sheltered accommodation for the elderly.

The ancient building was among the winners in this year's West Sussex design and sustainability awards.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, county council cabinet member for environment and economy, said a record number of applications were received for the 2009 awards.

"The standard has been excellent, making it a difficult decision for judges to choose the winners," she added.
