Twelve bundles of reeds from Fishbourne have made their debut in a London theatre.
The Chichester Festival Theatre production of the Seagull, currently showing at The National Theatre, made an unusual call to The Chichester Wildfowlers’ Association requesting the reeds for stage scenery last week.
A spokesperson from the Wildfowlers’ association said: “When we were asked to supply the reeds we replied ‘yes we could!’
“One of our conservation projects was to restore the Fishbourne mill pond reed bed buy cutting the old reeds to encourage new growth.
“Twelve bundles of reed were cut over the weekend and ferried across Fishbourne mill pond by dinghy, ready to be collected and transported to London.
“The dinghy was so full of reeds it could hardly be seen!”
