A BLOOMING achievement for a care home has seen it scoop an award for its ‘beautiful, relaxing and engaging outdoor spaces’.

Marriott House and Marriott Lodge, of Tollhouse Close, Chichester, received an outstanding level five award at this year’s Royal Horticultural Society South and South East in Bloom competition.

It triumphed in the category entitled It’s Your Neighbourhood.

General manager Theresa Shell, who collected the award, said: “Many of our family of residents are keen gardeners and appreciate the easy access and enjoy doing a bit of weeding.

“They can often be found relaxing and swapping gardening tales with other residents.

“It helps to foster a sense of family in our home from home.”

She collected the award at a special ceremony that was held in Tunbridge Wells.

A spokeswoman for the care home said the award was ‘a reflection of the time and dedication paid to providing beautiful relaxing and engaging outdoor spaces’ for its residents.

In addition, Marriott House and Marriott Lodge also has a sensory garden with a nautical theme and a sheltered courtyard garden.

Marriott Lodge’s activity co-ordinator Justine Cowell said: “Over the summer we have organised many activities in our gardens.

“Residents that would ordinarily be housebound have been able to enjoy the fresh Chichester air – watching the peregrine falcons fly over the cathedral.”

She also said all of the gardens were wheelchair accessible and very popular with the residents.

It’s Your Neighbourhood is a grassroots community gardening campaign by South and South East in Bloom organisers.

It aims to help people make lasting improvements to their local areas.

Groups are supported in their activities with advice and guidance and receive annual feedback.
