Leading personal injury solicitors at Chichester law firm George Ide LLP have welcomed government-level support for the scheme.

Commenting on the proposed ‘Chemroute’ cycle path, intended to run alongside the existing A259 linking Emsworth and Chichester, George Ide partner Paul Fretwell praised local MP Andrew Tyrie for backing the scheme.

“We cyclists need all the help we can get to be safe,” said Paul, who regularly cycles between his office in St Pancras, Chichester and his home in Southsea.

“I am hoping this new cycle route will link with proposed upgrades to the same road on the western approach to Emsworth that were revealed earlier this year by Havant Borough Council.

“As a personal injury lawyer specialising in head and other serious injury claims, almost every new instruction I have received over the last few months has involved a killed or seriously injured cyclist or motorbike rider.

“Any improvements that will enhance the safety of cycling on the South’s roads cannot come too quickly, for everyone’s sake.”

The Chemroute scheme considers cycle-friendly road lay-out upgrades at various points along the A259 including improvements to cycle lane provision, permanent raised barriers to separate cyclists from other road traffic, a new mini-roundabout in Fishbourne and an updated roundabout layout near the village of Bosham.

A public meeting was held at County Hall in Chichester last week on Tuesday, November 10, to discuss the proposals and suggest funding options for the scheme.

Improvements carried out earlier this year by Havant Borough Council between Havant and Emsworth included the provision of a new off-road cycle track between the A27 subway access and Selangor Avenue, a reconfiguration of two crossing points and extensive cycle lane resurfacing.
