Chidham flower festival celebrates 800 years since Magna Carta

Flower arrangers contributed creative arrangements which interpreted different aspects of the document, which is thought of as planting the seeds of democracy.

In addition, needleworkers created colourful hangings to demonstrate the arms of the 25 barons whose rebellion forced King John to agree to the terms of the Magna Carta.

Held at Chidham’s St Mary’s Church, the event raised funds for the 800-year-old building.

Harry Bates, church warden for St Mary’s Church, said: “Later in the year the church will be having an inspection, as it is a Grade II listed building, and the fundraising will help cover repairs that such a building inevitably needs.

“It was certainly an enjoyable occasion, and we had people visit from all over.

“It was suprising how many people have heard about Magna Carta, but didn’t really know what it involved.”

Nina Bates, festival organiser, said: “We had draws, raffles, refreshments and a children’s quiz – it was a 
very happy time, a great community event, and the weather was kind to us!”
