Competition successes for Chichester students

The schools have operated a successful CCF (Combined Cadet Force) contingent for more than 50 years.

A group of 13 RAF cadets won places in the final of the Air Squadron Trophy Competition, having competed in seven different activities against eight other schools in the regional heat.

They took home the trophy for the Leadership Challenge and were second in both the Command Tasks and First Aid.

Overall, they came third and now go forward to the national competition, to be held in March at RAF Halton.

Lewis Hart recently completed the FireBreak course, an innovative youth programme run by West Sussex firefighters. It is aimed at students aged 12 and 14 and actively encourages them to become positive role models.

Lewis had to attend Bognor Fire Station for five consecutive days, working on classroom-based activities and practical training, including hose and ladder drills, designed to promote teamwork, social awareness and self-discipline, and help reduce negative influences.

Four pupils learned two poems, one pre-1914 and one post-1914, to recite in a Poetry by Heart competition.

Year-ten student Sophie Canlin was the overall winner, with year-11 student Chloe Turner as runner up. Congratulations were also given to the other participants, Lauren Farndell from year ten and Mel Mulligan from year 11.

While the judges made their decision, the audience of students and teachers was given the task of learning a line of poetry to perform.

Tracey Waller, marketing and publicity co-ordinator, said: “All the pupils performed their poems with great confidence and understanding of the themes and the judges had an extremely difficult time deciding a winner.

“The competition was a really enjoyable event with fantastic, inspiring performances which showed the pupils dedication to the art of learning poetry. It taught the pupils, and the two year-ten classes who watched, a lot about learning by heart and the power of revision, all great preparation techniques for their GCSEs.”

Sophie now goes on to the county championship in Hampshire on February 25 and will have to add another poem to her repertoire from the World War One anthology.

Artist Adam Swain has been working with year-seven students at Chichester High School for Girls as part of the Recycled Art competition and exhibition.

He is inspiring young people at schools and colleges in West Sussex ahead of the competition, which opens at the Guildhall in Priory Park, Chichester, on June 18 and runs until June 26.

Adam, exhibition co-ordinator, said many families throw away electrical goods in their household bins but they should go to a recycling centres, where valuable metals and minerals can be salvaged.

Students drew around various objects, like toasters, radios and old computer equipment, to achieve two large display boards of recycled images.

Adam suggested lots of new ideas about working with different materials and products to achieve an artistic impression.
