Villagers were evacuated after a gas main was ruptured in a car crash.
The crash happened in Maynards Green, East Sussex, at 4.30am today (Saturday December 19).
A police spokesman said some 30 residents were evacuated to a nearby school. Other villagers and residents in Heathfield, which was downwind from the main, were advised to close their windows and doors and stay indoors while repairs were carried out.
A 34-year-old woman from Heathfield who was driving the car was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital with cuts and bruises.
The road through Maynards Green was closed to traffic and pedestrians.
The evacuees returned home from St Marys school, Horam, by 8.30am.
A police spokesman said the Transco gas engineers were to work on ‘more permanent’ repairs at the scene today.
The driver was the only one in the car and no one else was injured or other damage caused.
