Appeal for witnesses to Chichester assault

POLICE have today (Tuesday, January 29) appealed for witnesses to an assault in Chichester.

At around 3.55pm on Thursday, January 17, the victim, a man in his 40s, was waiting at a bus stop in Charles Avenue when he noticed a silver car speeding along the road.

He signalled for it to slow down.

“The driver of the car then stopped and reversed back towards the victim, stopping next to where he stood,” said a Sussex Police spokeswoman.

“The car had three men inside.

“A blond-haired man in the front passenger seat shouted at the victim and words were exchanged.

“The car was then driven off again, and again it reversed back to the victim.

“Two of the men got out of the car and one of them punched the victim to the side of his face, followed by a couple of other punches.

“They then got back into the car and it was driven towards the victim who jumped onto the car bonnet to prevent being hit. The victim fell from the bonnet as the car was driven away.”

The car is believed to be a silver Mercedes, five-door saloon.

Two of the men had blond hair and one dark hair.

The victim suffered from pain to his face and leg as a result of the incident.

PC Ben Hitchman of West Sussex Response Investigation Team said: “This was obviously a very distressing incident for the victim and we are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident and heard exchanges of words between the three men in the car and the victim.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who knows who the three men in the car were.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 997 of 17/1 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
