A ROAD policing officer has been ordered to pay more than £1,000 by a court, after being found guilty of common assault.
Michael Perkins, 49, who was based in Chichester, appeared at Hastings Magistrates’ Court on Monday and Tuesday (November 26 and 27).
He was found guilty of common assault against a woman prisoner he was transporting to custody in November 2011, after she had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
Perkins was fined £495 and ordered to pay £900 costs.
He was found not guilty of a separate charge of using threatening words or behaviour.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “This matter will now be the subject of an internal disciplinary process.”
In the period since the offence, the road policing unit has moved to Arundel from Chichester.
