Murder probe after man stabbed near Chichester

Detectives are investigating the murder of a 45-year-old Romanian man whose body was found at a plant nursery near Chichester.

Another Romanian man, aged 53, has been arrested and police have until 10.30pm today (Tuesday, December 28) to question him.

The murder took place at 12.20am on Sunday at Second Avenue off Almodington Lane, Almodington.

A clothed body was found on the ground with several stab wounds. It is believed the man had been staying at the site and died shortly before the alarm was raised.

Scenes of crime and specialist search officers have been at the scene since Sunday afternoon.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Sloan, who is heading the enquiry, said: “A thorough investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the death of this man.

“A post-mortem is still to take place and the man has yet to be formally identified, as we are very much in the early stages of the investigation.”

He added: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Bracklesham Bay or Birdham areas, not far from Selsey, late on Christmas night who may have spotted anything or anyone acting suspiciously.”
