Spate of break-ins at Co-op stores

Thieves have targetted a number of Co-operative stores this week, taking thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes.

Staff at Southern Co-operative Food stores in Selsey High Street and on Hayling Island have confirmed the shops were burgled during the early hours of Monday morning.

Another store in Delling Lane, Bosham, which is understood also to be a Co-operative food store, was broken into at around 4.50am on Friday 17, but police records indicate nothing was reported stolen.

Duty manager at the Hayling Island store in Elm Grove, Oliver Levinf, said the burglars prised open the store door with a crowbar at about 3am and took about £3,500 worth of cigarettes.

Police logs for the Selsey incident at 4.22am the same night detail three people wearing balaclavas and a smashed window, with cigarettes also taken.

A staff member at the Selsey branch said the shop re-opened the same day and all three stores are open for business as usual.

Anyone with information about the break-ins can contact police on 101 citing reference 0074 of 20/03 for Selsey, and ref 0189 of 17/03 for the Bosham store.
