Sussex Police changes are welcomed

THE chairman of Sussex Police Authority has welcomed new legislation to introduce directly elected Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC).

Steve Waight said the move, passed by the government last week, would increase public accountability.

“We must not underestimate the significance of this step for more visible police accountability, it is in some ways the equivalent of Sussex voting for the mayor of London and effectively the people of Sussex will be the employers of the PCC.”

Elections take place in November 2012. The PCC will be responsible for overseeing policing in the county, which will include holding the chief constable to account.
