Thieves use paint trick to steal $4,000

A man had $4,000 stolen from him in a calculated distraction burglary in Chichester city centre.

The thieves handed the man a tissues saying he had paint on the back of his jacket, while he was in Clinton’s Cards in East Street on Wednesday, May 4.

The victim turned around and took his jacket off, only to discover that it was make-up on his jacket, and trousers.

When he put his jacket back on, the envelope in his pocket with $4,000 (£2,400) inside had gone.

The 52-year-old had withdrawn the cash from nearby Barclays Bank at 2pm.

The woman was with another woman, both aged in their 50s, and a man, all of whom were described as being of Oriental appearance. More detailed descriptions are being compiled.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “This type of distraction theft is very infrequent but we remind people to be aware of the potential for such offences, especially in busy places.”
