THE opening day of this year’s Arundel Festival will feature a funky flash mob performance and everyone is welcome to join in.

A mix of professional and community dancers are hoping to wow festival-goers with a dance routine to the Mark Ronson mega-hit Uptown Funk.

A festival spokesman said: “As a complete change from the norm, this year’s official opening ceremony will feature a flash mob.

“The dance tutor is adept at teaching all ages and abilities. She creates an inclusive atmosphere where participants learn the routine in a supportive, fun environment.

“Anyone can do it, whether you attend regular dance classes or haven’t done anything physical or co-ordinated since school.”

A flash mob is defined as a random event in a public space that suddenly appears from nowhere, involving a diverse group of people, then disappears as if nothing has happened.

Starting at The Kings Arms in Tarrant Street, the troupe will head down to The Memorial for the festival flag raising by the Duchess of Norfolk. The exact location of the flash mob will only be revealed at rehearsals, which are free to attend and are taking placing at 7.30pm, tonight, in Jubilee Gardens, and between 11am and 1.30pm, on Saturday, at the Victoria Institute, in Tarrant Street. Those who can’t attend can access a free training video by contacting the organisers.

The routine, put together by Brighton Dance Flash Mobs, will take place at 2pm on Saturday.

The Celebration Samba Band will also be performing.
