The six-year-old St James’ CE Primary School pupil created a picture of a brontosaurus with the caption ‘don’t die out like the dinosaurs – get a CO alarm’.

He won £150 for himself and £250 for his school in the 2016 CO Awareness Competition, run by the UK’s gas distribution network companies.

Ashton was presented with his prize by Barry Sheerman MP, co-chairman of the all-party parliamentary group for carbon monoxide, at an awards ceremony at the Palace of Westminster.

Robbie Stevenson, group social responsibility manager for SGN, one of the main sponsors, said: “This year’s competition was a great success. We had a record number of entries and the children came up with some really imaginative ways of communicating this important message.

“Ashton’s poster was chosen as one of the winning entries because it was very eye-catching and perfectly illustrated the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.”

The competition was split into five regions nationwide and two categories, for Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. Children were asked to design a poster, write a poem or make a film warning about the dangers of CO poisoning and how to avoid them.
