MEMBERS of a school cycling team are full of pride after winning a clutch of silverware following success at a national competition this month.
Fourteen members of the Oakwood Racers, from Oakwood School, won eight medals at the British Schools’ Cycling Association National Hard Track Championships 2011.
The championships were held at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth.
The team took advantage of the glorious spring weather with their hard work certainly paying off in the contest, and building on last year’s result of one bronze medal which was won by Polly Williams.
The team took part in a multi-race event known as an omnium.
In an omnium, each competitor has to ride in three different types of race: the pursuit, which is against the clock; the sprint, a one-lap dash involving tactics (and usually against one or two other riders) and, finally, a scratch race which is a multiple-lap race with a group of riders.
