A building alarm which rang continuously for eight hours has been driving office employees up the wall.
The ADT alarm outside a building in Southgate, Chichester, occupied by the Jobcentre and Southgate House, had been sounding since at least 8am this morning, and only turned off after 4.30pm.
It neighbours a number of other businesses, including the Chichester Observer, where staff say problems with the alarm have been happening off and on for three weeks.
Rose Peach, advertising assistant, said just before it was switched off: “I’m beyond crunchy now, I just want to go round with a baseball bat and hit it.
“It drove me nuts all last week.”
Sports reporter Lewis Mason, who usually works at another office, said: “I was over here working last week and it was going off all-day then.
“Today it’s been going since at least 8am. It’s gone 4pm and it’s still going. It’s driving us all crazy.”
He added: “It’s boiling in this office as well today, but none of us can open a window because the sound is deafening.”
Graham Francis, partner at Moore Stephens Chartered Accountants, said: “When you hear an alarm you usually expect someone to turn it off after a couple of hours, not to be waiting for ten hours for someone to deal with it.
“It does irritate. It was either last Tuesday or Thursday that is it was the same and it wasn’t resolved until well after 4pm.”
