A 21-YEAR-OLD who died in a boating accident in Cobnor on Friday (July 1) was “in the prime of his life”.

Joel Eager, of Kings Walk, Shoreham, died after falling overboard while sailing with friends in Chichester Harbour.

In a statement, his family said: “We are naturally devastated over the loss of Joel.

“Joel had returned home having just graduated from Exeter University.

“He was an extremely gifted and intelligent young man in the prime of life. Our consolation is that he was enjoying the ‘perfect day’ in the company of close friends.

“He was poised to embrace a brilliant future, in every aspect of his full life, he was dearly loved by every one of us.”

Joel was in a rigid inflatable boat near the Christian Youth Enterprises Sailing Centre in Cobnor, when the accident happened.

He was pulled from the water by two other men in the boat, but suffered a serious head injury. He was airlifted to King’s Hospital in London by the Sussex Air Ambulance, where he later died.

A Sussex Police spokesman said a full investigation had taken place, which found it to be a “very tragic accident”, which is not being treated as suspicious.
