FIREFIGHTERS in West Sussex will join their national counterparts in striking today (May 2) and over the weekend.

Firefighters will also strike between 2pm and 2am on Saturday (May 3) and between 10am and 3pm on Sunday (May 4).

The strikes are a reaction to a pensions dispute, which has already caused previous strikes in recent months.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We do have robust contingency plans in event of a strike, however, during any period of industrial action we do have fewer resources available and will be prioritising life-threatening incidents such as house fires and traffic collisions where people have been reported as trapped, but we would still ask people to dial 999 in an emergency.”

The general secretary of the FBU Matt Wrack said the government was ignoring issues that ‘threaten the future of firefighters and their families’.
