Special guests The Duchess of Norfolk and Worthing youth mayor Harry Williams joined Guide commissioners, vice presidents and leaders at Arundel Town Hall last Thursday to see 20 Guides collect their awards.

County commissioner Amanda Teasel welcomed everyone and invited Beth Almond, Hannah Almond, Katie Almond, Poppy Ellis, Zoe Moore, Charlotte Perry, Isobel Thomas, Sarah Thomas and Rebecca Yeates to the 'stage' to receive The Baden-Powell Challenge, the highest award available to members aged ten to 14.

The challenge involves being an active member of a Guide unit, taking part in various patrol activities and completing a Baden-Powell adventure weekend.

Belle West received a Guide Camp Permit, an award for Guides aged 12 and over who are experienced at camping. It challenges the girls to plan and run a two or three-night camp for other Guides and enables them to take other Guides away without a leader.

The Chief Guide Challenge was awarded to Lauriane Canadas and Emily Johnston. This award for senior section members, aged 14 to 25, sees girls having to complete activities in the Look Wider programme on themes of creativity, out of doors, independent living, fit for life, community action, leadership, international and personal values.

The Young Leader Qualification, also for the senior section, was awarded to Charlotte Collins, Saffron Gordon, Chloe-Anne Heaton, Sarah Roberts, Rebecca Selly, Molly Stringer, Emma Watson and Abi Welsman. The qualification recognises the development of leadership and unit management skills, alongside knowledge of the sectional programmes and other key areas of Girlguiding leadership.

Mrs Mel Ford, county adviser for the senior section, said: "Every award presented is the culmination of many months of hard work and effort.

"Events such as this exist to recognise the commitment and enthusiasm given by our young members, but also serve to acknowledge the huge amount of support given by family, friends and leaders.

"The awards presented are testament to the great levels of success our members are achieving and also reflects positively on a county where youth participation is encouraged, activities are relevant and members are given the space and time to develop as individuals."

In 2016, Girlguiding is celebrating 100 years of the senior section. Contact Girlguiding on 0800 1695901 or visit www.girlguiding.org.uk to find out how to get involved.
