Health and safety assembly for Tangmere school pupils

Pupils from Tangmere Primary Academy in Chichester have been learning about health and safety on building sites, as part of an initiative set up by Miller Homes Southern.

The school is close to the award-winning house builders’ Bader Heights development in Tangmere.

Youngsters were given an interactive assembly by health, safety and environmental advisor, Alec Arnold, on how new homes are constructed, the future of house building and the potential risks and hazards around construction sites.

They also learnt how to recognise the different warning signs used and steering clear of vehicles, such as trucks and forklifts.

The children were given special Miller Homes reflective snapbands to ensure they are easily visible during the winter months.

Alec said: “It is very important to us that we work with local schools and give the youngsters an insight into how modern homes are built.

“One of our top priorities is ensuring children close to our developments know about the potential risks they may face around building sites and we try to make the health and safety talks as fun and as informative as possible for the pupils and they were all really enthusiastic and keen to get involved.

“Building partnerships within the local community is extremely important to us and we hope to carry out more events like this in the future.”

Deputy head teacher, Miss Kirsty Golds, said: “The children really enjoyed the assembly given by Miller Homes, it was really interactive and hands on. They had a lot of fun trying on the hard hats and high-vis jackets.

“It was really useful for them to learn about signs used on building sites and they found it really interesting, particularly as there is a building site near the school and some of them live close to it; so it’s important for them to have site safety awareness.”
