REPORTS of decomposing balls of fat which are dangerous to dogs have been spotted on West Wittering beach.

A dog walker called the Observer, and said he came across the oil-based fat ball on West Wittering beach when walking his dog this morning (January 6).

He described it as ‘a white sticky mass about size of a five gallon drum’.

The substance has been known to be dangerous to dogs, and owners are advised to check with the vets if their dog comes into contact with it.

A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “We are aware of reports of a small quantity of a fatty substance being washed up on some local beaches and are looking into the matter.

“Dog owners are advised to keep their pets on a lead when walking on local beaches and not to let them eat the substance.”

Chichester District Council has been informed of the issue.
