High Sheriff impressed by Home-Start
Home-Start Chichester and District played host to Mark Spofforth, High Sheriff of West Sussex, on Tuesday.
Mr Spofforth visited the charity at its base, Chichester Nursery School Children and Family Centre, in St James Road, Chichester, to learn about its work.
He had recently found out about Home-Start and was keen to learn more about the charity that supports many families across the Chichester district.
Mr Spofforth met and chatted to families supported by Home-Start, volunteers who provide the lifeline service to families, staff and trustees.
There was also some time to play with children who benefit hugely from Home-Start volunteers’ weekly visits.
Mr Spofforth said he really appreciated the chance to find out more about a charity he previously knew little about.
“I am very impressed with the volunteers that support Home-Start, both their commitment and time given,” he said.
“It has been very interesting hearing from the families and finding out the benefits that they get from this local charity and how well matched they are with the volunteers that visit them.
“What is now needed is for this charity here on our doorstep to get a higher profile to aid the fundraising that they are doing in our community, which is much needed to keep this family based charity going.”
Home-Start boosts parents’ confidence and self-esteem, strengthening family bonds and relationships.
It provides practical and emotional support to vulnerable families and young children through home visits from experienced volunteers, trained and supervised by a small staff team.
The charity works with parents who have lost confidence in their parenting skills, who may find it difficult to cope with their children’s behaviour, with their own emotional wellbeing, with the day-to-day management of the home, or with the challenges or low income, debt and poor housing.
Last year, Home-Start Chichester and District supported 96 families and a total of 205 young children.
