Hundreds of old hens are saved from the slaughter

Hens that were destined for the slaughter are looking for a new home and a pop-up hen collection will be held in Chichester later this month.

Hundreds of retired ex-battery hens that have come to the end of their commercial egg-laying days will be looking for new owners when the collection takes place on August 23.

National charity the British Hen Welfare Trust are holding the event and have successfully re-homed more than 470,000 hens since starting in 2005.

Local co-ordinator Mella Ball said: “If you haven’t adopted hens before, it’s incredibly rewarding and the feel-good factor in saving their lives is simply unbeatable.”

Anyone interested in adopting a few hens should contact the charity prior to the event to reserve them.
