A BUSY junction which leads under the city walls has been brandished a ‘death trap’ following an accident this week.
A cyclist and a car collided along North Walls in Chichester at 10.25am on Tuesday morning, police confirmed.
The cyclist snapped both ligaments in his shoulder and suffered minor head injuries and was taken to St Richard’s Hospital.
Concern had already been raised over the safety of the junction which joins Chapel Street and North Walls.
In a letter to the Observer, published on July 9, North Walls resident Adam Havoc called it the ‘dumbest junction and possibly the most dangerous in Chichester’.
He complained that motorists pulling out of Chapel Street from under the city walls were now faced with cyclists coming both ways along North Walls because of the new cycle paths.
“Turning left or right into North Walls used to be one-way streets but now cyclists are encouraged to ride against the traffic on both these very narrow roads. Bonkers!” he wrote.
Speaking to the Observer on Tuesday, Adam said: “I saw the accident and I feel very sorry for both the injured cyclist and the motorist who looked very shaken up.
“I would say absolutely it’s the dumbest junction in Chichester.
“When turning either left or right out of Chapel Street, the city wall makes it impossible to see cyclists, the only thing to do is gingerly pull out.
“It’s an absolute black spot, I think it’s crazy that they’ve put a cycle route there, it’s so dangerous.”
Another North Walls resident, who also saw the accident but did not want to be named, said: “It’s a major danger, an absolute death trap.
“Turning left or right on to North Walls is one-way to motorists but because of the cycle lane it encourages cyclists to go against the flow of traffic.
“A lot of people here feel the same and I do hope something is done about it before somebody gets seriously hurt.”
Adam added that he regularly saw confusion between cyclists and motorists along North Walls.
“For years drivers have only had to worry about what was happening in front of them but now they have to give way to cyclists they can’t see,” he said.
“If nothing else, I want to warn drivers to beware of cyclists along the road.”
