Chief executive Rom Sanglaji said: “We have staged a number of fundraising and awareness events during our celebrations, but to receive a letter from the PM was just fantastic.

“Our members are over the moon.”

SASBAH was launched in February, 1965, and the 12 months between February, 2015, and February, 2016, were earmarked to celebrate the charity’s achievements.

The association runs monthly support groups across West Sussex.

Mr Cameron’s letter offered his ‘heartfelt congratulations’ to the charity for its 50 years and said its work was ‘vitally important’.

Caroline Ansell, Eastbourne and Willingdon MP, presented the letter to Mr Sanglaji at the Eastbourne Arndale Centre during a fundraising day.

She said: “SASBAH has done a tremendous job for a half a century in Sussex, helping people with these conditions get the best help they can, so it was an honour for me to present the letter from the Prime Minister to them recognising their dedication.

“The charity is now helping around 500 people across East and West Sussex and my heartfelt thanks go to those who work for and run the organisation and also to the volunteers.”
