Macmillan Cancer Support to get boost from Chichester cake auction

Fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support will be a piece of cake for an Observer reader at the World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday next week.

More Food, the Chichester bakery which makes some of the most delicious hand-crafted cakes around, has donated a stunning one-off creation to be auctioned in aid of the charity.

In the shape of a coffee cup and featuring the distinctive colours of the coffee morning, it was designed especially for the occasion by Sara Powell, the company's bakery and product development technician.

It will be auctioned by the Observer and we are inviting our readers to make a bid for the cake. This eye-catching and mouth-watering work of art of the baker's trade will make a wonderful centrepiece and talking point at any coffee morning '“ and the highest bid will win.

Caron Rowe, managing director of More Food, said she was delighted to be supporting a local effort.

"We like to support Macmillan because it's a cause which is very close to our hearts '“ cancer affects so many people.

"We do something every year with John Lewis in London, in their food hall, but it is lovely to make a special cake and be associated with a local fundraising effort.

"Making the cake was quite a challenge, but it's good to have that kind of a challenge occasionally. Sara put a lot of effort into it and so did our bakers and we hope someone will make a really good bid for it."

Sara Powell, with the help of baker Roy Urry, came up with several incarnations to find a robust shape which would work in three dimensions.

Four six-inch Victoria sponge cakes were placed on top of one another to create the basic cup shape, with locally-sourced raspberry jam between the layers, then butter icing was generously spread around this.

The handle of the cake was cut from another piece of cake and delicately attached to the side.

The finishing touches were hand-crafted flowers using royal icing and liquid colours, tied in with the colours of the coffee morning campaign.
