Man dies in shipping container fire at Sussex storage facility

A man has sadly died following a fire in a shipping container at a Sussex storage facility.

The fire, at Littlehampton Marina, near Ferry Road, Littlehampton, happened yesterday afternoon (October 22).

Sussex Police confirmed the news today (October 23).

A spokesman said: “We can now confirm a man’s body was sadly recovered following a fire at a storage facility in Ferry Road, Littlehampton, yesterday afternoon.

“His next of kin have been informed, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“The death is being treated as unexplained at this stage, and we’re urging anyone with any information to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 535 of 22/10.”

Yesterday, a spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “Joint Fire Control received a call to reports of a fire in the open off Ferry Road in Littlehampton at around 12.20pm this afternoon.

“Two fire engines from Littlehampton along with appliances from East Preston and Bognor Regis were mobilised to the scene, and upon arrival crews were faced with well developed fire involving the contents of a small shipping container.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using a jet, a hose reel and a fog nail. Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no further hotspots.”

Police attended and cordoned off the scene. It remains cordoned off today.

Arun Self Storage, the company which owns the containers where the fire happened, said they did not wish to comment at this stage.
