The man with the ‘nicest job in Britain’ visits the Apuldram Centre

Luke, 26, from Gloucestershire, is on a mission to do good throughout the country with Utility Aid.

In 2015 he is spending different weeks at 45 different charities in the UK, with this week marking his first visit to West Sussex as he came to the Apuldram Centre, near Chichester.

“I’ve loved it, I’ve genuinely loved it,” said Luke of his time at Apuldram.

“All the charities are so different. I can’t really compare one to another because there’s no comparison but I really have enjoyed this week. There are certain weeks it comes to and Thursday and I think ‘I wish I can stay’.

“If I’m ever in the area I’ll pop back. It’s been wonderful and everyone’s so lovely.”

He has been at the centre all week, taking part in everything from lettuce picking to cooking in the kitchen and working in the shop.

“It’s amazing from our point of view to have Luke here and be part of the nicest job in Britain,” said Apuldram volunteer Paul Reed.

“I think this is one of the nicest places you can be in Britain. I love coming here as do all the other volunteers and staff.”

He told Luke it had been ‘lovely’ having him around.

“I know you’ve been appreciated by all the people you’ve been working with,” he said.

Luke shot to fame last year after he launched his blog The Good Deed Diary, where he recounted each good deed he did a day, ranging from baking cakes and sending them to friends and family to paying for the driver’s lunch behind him in a McDonald’s drive-thru queue.

Apuldram was his 21st charity out of the 45 he is visiting, with his diary full until the end of the year.

Just next week he is doing a 100-mile bike ride for Help for Heroes and has been practising in the evenings this week riding down to Selsey Bill and back again in the evenings.

After his blog took off, a reader suggested he apply for the ‘nicest job in Britain’ and he was successful.

“It’s less of a job and more of a lifestyle,” he said. “I’m very lucky and privileged to be in the position to do something like this.

“It really is the nicest job in Britain because you get to travel the country and help so many people on a daily basis.”

Luke said his motto was ‘if you can’t find a kind person be one’.
