He was welcomed at the shop in North Pallant last Tuesday for a reception, where he was able to speak with volunteers.

The society is a Chichester-based charity providing vital financial support and practical assistance to merchant seafarers, fishermen and their dependants in need.

Mr Budge was brought up to date with the society’s work on behalf of the seafaring community throughout the UK and Ireland and reminded of its 177-year history.

In the last year, grants totalling £1.4 million were given in more than 2,000 cases of need.
