Owen Aldous won a gold medal in the cabinet making (senior) category, while Ronnrick Marquez took the bronze medal.

Owen said: “It was really good to win – it’s what I was working towards. We had a lot to do in the time and we had to show a lot of skill in what we were doing, so hopefully I’ve done enough to secure a place in the national final!”

There were also successes in the new entrant category for cabinet making, with Wesley Stoner and Dan Rayment picking up silver and bronze medals respectively. There were also celebrations in painting and decorating (senior), with Dean Bicknell winning a bronze medal.

Alun Jones, painting and decorating lecturer at Chichester College, said: “Dean put in an excellent effort with his first go at a SkillBuild competition to win bronze – he wasn’t far off the silver and I’m sure with a little more training, he’ll go even further next time!”

Christian Notley, deputy head of learning for furniture making at Chichester and WorldSkills UK training manager for cabinet making, added: “We have an exceptional pedigree of cabinet making students at Chichester and I’m delighted that we’re showing no signs in slowing down. Owen did fantastically well in achieving a gold medal, while Ronnrick, Dan and Wesley all did themselves proud in their first competitions.”

Chichester’s Aaron Barker added to the haul of skills medals. He was awarded with a bronze medal in the SkillPlumb competition – which, alongside SkillElectric, was held at Chichester College for the third year running.

Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chichester College principal, said: “We are very proud of the standard of achievement from our students at skills competitions. “They – and their lecturers – work extremely hard to reach these levels. Together they put in a lot of hours, often outside of class time to reach competition level, so to see six of our entrants placing in their categories is simply outstanding.”
