More displays needed to make Chichester gala go with a swing

DON’T be shy – get in touch and let’s make this summer’s Chichester Gala an event to remember.

That’s the message from the event organisers, who are busy putting together a programme of events for Saturday, June 2.

Already planned, is a procession through the city centre and past the Cross, with stalls and displays afterwards at Priory Park, finishing with a Last Night at the Proms musical extravaganza with a military band.

And although some people have come forward who are keen to stage arena displays, even more are needed.

Claire Adams, of Chichester City Council, said: “The procession should be great fun. And we have some nice displays, including a mini fairground and some ferret racing.

“But we need lots more.

“We want to make this a Peoples’ Gala, and there must be lots of people locally who could put on something very entertaining.

“Do we have fire eaters out there?

“A club who would like to put on a gymnastic display, or a cheerleader routine?

“How about a tug o’ war challenge, or dog agility displays? Or Punch and Judy?

“We hope there will be arena displays from about midday to 5pm, but to make it entertaining we need to hear from more people.

“About 30 people initially expressed an interest in taking part, but they haven’t come back to us with from details.

“I hope lots of people come forward to entertain the thousands we hope will turn up for the day.

“It is also an opportunity for local organisations to promote themselves in front of a lot of people.”

The closing date for applications to take part is April 20.
