The charity, which announced its plans to build a new purpose-built hospice two years ago, began clearing the new site at the beginning of August.

More than than half of the derelict glass houses on the site have already been removed, and provided sufficent funds are found, Kier Construction will begin work on the ‘Dreambuilding’ next summer.

Clearance will continue until the end of November, as the Wessex demolition team works through almost three acres of vegetation, removing rubbish and taking recycable materials to the Woodhorn Group in Tangmere.

Glass from each of the greenhouses is being removed by hand and the metal frames mechanically dismantled ready to be recycled at EMR in Portsmouth.

Trevor White, operations director for Kier Construction, Southern said: “We’re delighted to have been appointed to deliver the new hospice in Bosham and look forward to working with St Wilfrid’s Hospice throughout the project.

“We’ll bring our experience of working in the health and residential care sectors to deliver this high quality facility which is able to respond to the future changes of care and place the needs of staff, patients and their families at the forefront of the design.”
