The event was part of the national community celebrations honouring murdered MP Jo Cox and inspired by her belief that ‘we have far more in common than that which divides us’.

Donnington Parish Council organised the gathering at Wiston Avenue Recreation Ground on Saturday and asked people to take a cake to share.

It was the ideal opportunity to showcase the recently-refurbished children’s playground and talk about further plans for equipment.

Parish councillor Samantha Houston said: “The event was a great success. The sun was shining and there was a good turnout of residents over a wide range of ages. People brought picnic rugs and chairs and relaxed in the Wiston Avenue recreation ground.

“The playground has recently been updated with new play equipment, including a pirate ship, climbing equipment, a balance course and wooden petrol pumps.

“The parish council took the opportunity to show plans and ask for feedback on a planned replacement toddler climbing frame and a new zip wire.”

The cupcake colouring competition attracted some colourful designs, for which prizes were awarded, and there were temporary pirate tattoos available for the children.

Samantha added: “It was a successful event which drew members of the community together for a relaxed afternoon.

“Amusingly, a resident has contacted the parish council to say they thought the event must have been cancelled as they could not hear the music, so it looks like we will have to turn up the volume next year!

“We hope that a regular summer event in the park will attract more residents each year and the event will grow in popularity.”
