A VITAL new puffin crossing has been installed at a busy East Wittering road, to the delight of the community.

The £53,000 crossing was built at Stocks Lane near East Wittering Community School after much campaigning. Pieter Montyn, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, officially opened the crossing on October 20.

East Wittering and Bracklesham Parish Council and parents from the school, Ginny Argyle, Kate Chaplin, Louise Chater and Chloe Munday, were active in raising the money needed for the much-needed crossing.

Cash donated as part of an agreement with local developers was used to help pay for the works.

Concerns were raised in 2009 about the crossing, following difficulties in recruiting a school crossing patrol. A petition raised 250 signatures in 2010 calling for a crossing to be built, which school governor Ginny Curry submitted.

Chichester MP Andrew Tyrie also supported plans to build the new crossing.
