Police have confirmed there was no fatal crash in Chichester after a website appeared to claim that three people lost their lives in a pile-up on Wednesday.

The article with the headline: “3 DEAD AND 7 CRITICAL IN MULTI-CAR CRASH IN CHICHESTER”, claims that three people were killed and seven remain in a critical condition following a multi-car crash, which it says was confirmed by police.

The story alleges: “The driver of the out-of-control car was ejected and thrown approximately 50 feet south of the accident scene. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A Sussex Police spokesman confirmed to the Observer that no such accident took place anywhere in Chichester on Wednesday, December 30.

The false story has been brandished a ‘horrible hoax’ by concerned people who have this morning contacted the Observer to ask if it was genuine.

The website also appears to be carrying identical stories, but with the location of the accident changed to other areas.

South East Coast Ambulance Service also confirmed there was no record to the alleged accident.
