Katy Bourne's video log: Sussex PCC calls time on hate crime

This summer I joined forces with the organisers of Pride and one of the oldest independent breweries in Sussex, Harveys, to help make Sussex #NoPlaceForHate.

The aim was to raise awareness of the Self Evident crime reporting app and to encourage victims and witnesses to use the Self Evident app and its bespoke hate crime support functions, funded by me and the London Mayor last year, which give them the choice of reporting to the police or specialist support.

In the ten days leading up to Pride six Harveys pubs across Sussex used specially designed beermats that featured a QR code on the back that, when scanned, downloaded the Self Evident hate crime reporting app onto customers’ smartphones. Rainbow design beermats were used in bars throughout Brighton.

Like many, I have no time for bigotry and believe that no one should be singled out and victimised because of their race, faith, sexual orientation, gender or disability. Although there were some light-hearted elements to the campaign with the use of images and videos of ‘Missy The Dog’ to encourage the download of the app it did however send out a very serious message: that hate crime will not be tolerated in Sussex.
