Putting down deep roots is key to thriving

I recently learnt that bamboo grows very little in the first couple of years after being planted but in the following year can grow up to 90 feet tall.

That’s in the region of 1mm every 90 seconds. It spends the first few years of its life putting down roots in preparation for its growth spurt.It is that time of year again when people are collecting exam results and there are many choices to be made; colleges, universities and new jobs. Putting down deep roots is key to thriving but those roots are not just about investing time in your study but are also about investing in relationships with those that will support you to live life to the full. I had the privilege of leading a youth camp for 400 young people earlier in the year called May Camp. This year the theme of the camp was ‘Thrive’ the inspiration for which came from Jesus’ words in the Bible, ‘I have come to give life to the full.’To me, that means that following him isn’t about rules - dos and don’ts - but about a relationship that sets up a life grounded in good things, helping us to make wise choices for our future.Faith Matters:Youth events; The church is one of the biggest voluntary providers of youth and children's work in Sussex. There are hundreds of youth groups that meet regularly across the county, as well as camps during the holidays. One such group is Friday Night Live run by Trinity Church, Lewes. Open to anyone from Year Seven upwards, Friday Night Live has boasted some of the most stylish, off-beat, fun, and social events available in the town.They usually meet on Fridays during term time between 7:30 and 9:30pm at Southover Church Hall at the bottom of St. James, Street, Lewes.Look out for other fun groups for young people in your area.‘Heroes and Heroines’ at Chichester Cathedral:On Friday 26th August, from 10am – 3pm, Chichester Cathedral is hosting another Family Activity: Bold and Beautiful!Make a knight’s helmet and shield or a lady’s beautiful hat and jewellery. Investigate the Cathedral’s ‘bold and beautiful’ heroes and heroines on our trail. Cost is £2.50 per child and there's no need to book.
