LETTER: Homes have been protected

I really have to protest about the contents of Mr Montcreiff's letter to you, where he misleadingly states that the Medmerry coastal realignment scheme and nature reserve is an example of 'an area being deliberately flooded under EU rules'.

I am a resident of Earnley Parish, where the scheme is located, and have followed closely its progress since it was proposed by the Environment Agency.

It is true that the Medmerry project – now complete – is compensatory habit under EU environmental regulations, but it is a managed coastal realignment scheme that is designed to protect the coast from further erosion and flooding.

The Institute of Civil Engineers website states that Medmerry has directly protected 348 homes from flooding.

In addition, it has made possible a number of other physically linked projects inland (including one near where I live) which have greatly reduced the risk of flooding to residents’ homes. Finally, it has created a wonderful environment that is attracting rare species and boosting the local tourist economy.

Mr Montcreiff should really check his facts before going to print.

The idea he promulgates that by simply leaving the EU we can “protect our environment properly and stop flooding” (from the so called “Brexit – The Facts” document) typifies much of the misinformation coming out of the Brexit camp.
