LETTER: Oving crossing is a necessity

I was delighted to see that the Observer is joining the campaign to save the Oving Crossing and its intelligent lights. But there is a glowing error in the article published on August 25th which states traffic will only be allowed in and out of Shopwyke Road on a left turn only basis.

That was what I believed until I attended a Highways England consultation when it was made clear that this is untrue as it is intended to completely close Shopwyke Road to all traffic.

There will be no entry and no exit between the A27 and Shopwyke Road (actually Oving Road east which then becomes Shopwyke Road) for vehicles and it is intended to erect a footbridge to replace the crossing for pedestrians.

The proposals have horrendous prospects and there will undoubtedly be more accidents at the Bognor Road and Portfield roundabouts for which Highways England will be responsible. It will make no difference to the traffic hold-ups caused by the roundabouts.

The Oving crossing is a vital necessity. We must save that crossing and its lights.
