LETTER: We need to look forward now

Mr Newby's comments on the result of the referendum (Observer, 9 June) and his elation at lower value pound do not necessarily relate to reality.

His reminiscence of ‘centuries before’ is admirable and seems to have been shared by a significant number of the populous that have ‘longer memories!’. Perhaps they can meet their needs by a visit to the excellent Weald & Downland Museum in Singleton where reminiscence of history is celebrated?

But we are in the 21st century, we need to look forward, the world is a significantly different world now than it was 43 years ago when we joined the EU.

In the seven days following the vote, I have heard numerous people comment that they wished they hadn’t voted out.

Maybe too late for that consideration now.

We are told that 75 per cent of the younger vote chose to remain, certainly the younger members of my family and their friends seem to justify this statistic.

We should be thinking of the world that our children and grandchildren will experience.

They, and to be honest, for the greater part of my life, I, have been raised as part of the EU, not as a stand alone country, they understand the need to integrate and be part of a larger community.

Sadly, I feel we have taken a route for which there is no plan, Mr Newby comments on all of the things that he thinks will change.

Well, they may do, but not now, and not for a significant number of years, and maybe not then either.

The out vote campaigned without a plan. What happens now? Who does what? Which laws remain and which go or change?

It is this uncertainty that causes problems, certainly in business.

Can the UK be self sustainable? Maybe in some sectors, but certainly not as a whole. We will still need the rest of the world, and in particular the EU. So, in wanting to trade with the EU will we end up paying for the privilege?

Well, yes I think we will, how much, unknown, but it could be as much as we currently pay – so, we will be outside of the EU, will not have any input to the EU decisions but still have to pay a similar amount of money! Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot!

The evidence is out there with other non-EU countries and how they have to trade with the EU. So maybe we won’t save all of that £350m a week that we were told about by the Brexiteers?

Now I must try to trace the Irish or French ancestors!
