Chichester District Council is one of the first authorities in the country to introduce contactless card payments.

New machines are being placed in every city centre car park, except Westgate and Avenue de Chartres, and also allow payment by debit and credit card or coins.

Councillor Gillian Keegan, cabinet member for commercial services, said: “We all know how frustrating it is when you have no spare change to pay for parking, so it’s great that there will now be multiple different payment choices for shoppers to choose from.

“We are one of the first councils in the country to offer contactless payment.”

The 33 new machines are expected to be in place by July, with minor disruptions anticipated.

Since contactless payment was introduced in January, more than 2,500 accounts have been created, the council says.

Cllr Keegan added: “In addition to this, the improvements coming to (multistory car park) Avenue de Chartres will not only reduce long term maintenance costs, but also enhance safety and accessibility for car park users.

“All of these improvements will continue to make parking in Chichester even easier, safer and more convenient.”
