Next Sunday (September 13) visitors to the centre will be able to go on guided garden tours and learn about the bio-diversity of the site.

The gardens include a wildlife pond, a wildflower meadow and a rock garden, while boundary areas are left to nature providing a rich range of wildlife habitats.

A biodiversity hotspot, the grounds also contain a wide variety of butterflies and over 100 varieties of moths as well as a huge range of other insect species.

There will be talks during the day by recently-retired head gardener Sue Attridge, about the garden that she so lovingly oversaw for ten years, and biodiversity expert Martin Hampton.

The artisanal plant nursery will be open too, offering a wide variety of plants for sale – all ready for autumn planting.

A spokesman for the centre said: “Our outdoor environment plays a major part in our work towards health and wellbeing.

Gardening is good for you as horticultural therapy, because it lightens your mood, reduces stress, and caring for plants enables people to have a sense of purpose and pride.”

Visitors must pre-book their place on the NGS website.
