Car boot sale coming to Bognor Regis next month

The car boot sale will be held at the rear of Jeneses Community Centre on May 22, giving residents a chance to browse a wide variety of stalls and bag themselves a bargain.

Organiser Steve Brunton said he has already booked around 20 stalls for the event and hopes it will become a regular town fixture.

There will also be a number of charity stalls at the boot sale, including one organised by Family Support Work, ensuring some of the money spent will go to a good cause.

“Hunston is the nearest car boot sale, then you’ve got Ford and Fontwell, which I’m not sure is even open anymore. So we got the idea to do it here because it’s just down from the town centre, it’s a minute from the station and it will bring lots of people to the building.” Mr Brunton said.

The boot sale will also feature a cafe, operating out of the Jeneses Community Centre kitchen.

For Mr Brunton, Bognor Regis is an ideal setting for a boot sale. He says the community has been crying out for one for quite some timeL“It’s a seaside town,” he said “and though you’ve got quite a few things for tourists here already, they like to do things other than go to the beach.

“We’ll have anything you can think of- clothes, kitchen wear, antiques and books, collectible stuff. All sorts.”

Mr Brunton, an actor with more than 100 film and TV appearances, also distributes free food from the rear of the Jeneses Community Centre as part of his voluntary work with The Knights Templar Great Britain.

The distribution service started at the front of the former church in December last year, after Mr Brunton received 15 pallets of food from local super markets. Now, Steve and the other volunteers support more than 300 people each week.

Now lockdown has lifted, however, many of the groups who use the centre have returned, so the distribution service has moved to the rear where there is a sizeable car park.

Mr Brunton said: “It’s been a great success. People still need food, and enjoy browsing so we’re happy to be here.

My family have lived in Bognor Regis for 60 years and it’s great to see such community spirit. Local people have been brilliant, donating so much bric-a-brac we almost filled a church hall!”
